I think that author John Steinbeck chose to use animal imagery when describing Lennie because the author had given Lennie characteristics such as being a big brad man who is remarkably strong but doesn't seem to pick up on social ques / isn't very verbal nor does he seem to use his brain much. His characteristics are like those of an animal, perhaps he chose to make this character this way and chose to use this imagery for this character to further his point that Lennie was this big guy that didn't understand things. The author wanted his readers to understand the Lennie wasn't a normal person.
